Stolen luxury cars found in Gauteng busts

Gauteng Province Police have confirmed arrests of suspects found in possession of stolen high performance vehicles. Lt. Col. Mavela Masondo has confirmed that six suspects have been taken into custody.

“Gauteng Police have arrested six suspects who were found in possession of high performance vehicles that were reported stolen, also suspected of being used in the commission of serious and violent crimes, including theft of money in transit. Four suspects were arrested in Oaklands, Johannesburg, while two suspects were arrested in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni on Monday January 3, 2022.

Police received information leading to bust of supercar

In addition to this, Masondo confirmed that the information passed on to law enforcement had led to successful arrests.

“Police have received information through Crime Intelligence about a safe house in Oaklands, Johannesburg, which contains high performance vehicles and suspects who may be involved in theft of funds in transit. Police from the Highway Patrol Unit, Flying Squad and Vision Security attended the safe house and spotted suspects tampering with the engine of a Ford Ranger.

Manhunt launched for remaining suspects

Additionally, Masondo said authorities were still on the hunt after some of the suspects managed to escape arrest.

“Seeing the police, the suspects fled on foot, shooting at the police. Police managed to arrest four of the suspects. Preliminary investigation revealed that the Ford Ranger was stolen from Olievenhoutbosh in December 2021 and the Mercedes Benz was stolen from Wonderboomproot in June 2013. Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects who fled.

More busts made in a separate incident

Similarly, Masondo confirmed that two more arrests were made in the province after a workshop raid.

“In a separate incident, police arrested two suspects in Boksburg after they were found with a Toyota Hilux and an Audi Q7 which were reported stolen from Alexandra and Roodepoort, respectively. Information was received by the police about a workshop in Boksburg where stolen and hijacked vehicles are stored. Police broke into the workshop and found two high performance vehicles that were believed to have been stolen.

The four suspects arrested in Oaklands will appear in Johannesburg Magistrates ‘Court while suspects arrested in Boksburg are expected to appear in Boksburg Magistrates’ Court in due course.
