Racing cars in Gaston County lead to fatal crash involving child

GASTON COUNTY, North Carolina – A six-year-old boy died and his father was seriously injured when a racing driver crashed into his car in Gaston County late Saturday night, the North Carolina Highway Patrol reported.

Soldiers said two cars, a Dodge Challenger driven by Gracie Eaves, 20, of Bessemer City, and an Audi coupe driven by Donnie Cobb, 46, of Kings Mountain were heading east on the US 74 near Sparrow Spring Road just before 9:30 p.m. Saturday. .

“We have testimonials that put it between 80, 90 and 100 miles per hour,” Private Ray Pierce said.

Investigators said that at one point the two cars crept to the side, causing Cobb’s car to enter a grassy median and head towards the westbound lanes, where it crashed into Santiago Lagunas’ car.

Private Pierce said Lagunas’ six-year-old son Liam was properly restrained in the back seat at the time of the crash.

The NCHSP said the three people were taken to hospitals for treatment. Liam Lagunas died around 4 a.m. on Sunday. Her father was taken to the CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia. Cobb was transferred to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in critical condition.
