Ferrari Fall / Winter 2014 watch collection is inspired by racing cars from the 1960s

Ferrari Store recently unveiled its latest watch models, the new Formula Italia Fall / Winter 2014 collection. Inspired by the interior materials and colors of revered Ferrari racing cars of the 1960s, Italians say the new limited edition Scuderia collection Ferrari Formula Italia captures the simplicity and function of their centuries-old craftsmanship.

Sporting a clean, vintage feel, the gently domed dials with date display are detailed with a printed Racing Shield logo, minute track and Arabic numerals that replicate the font found on the dashboard gauges of the Ferrari 156 F1. from 1961. Wristwatches have solar-textured sub-dials – 60-minute and 24-hour counters – that resemble the car’s rev and speedometers. To keep the vintage taste, its creators decided to position it at 3 and 9 o’clock, typical of chronographs of that time.

The red-orange-yellow detail on the 24 hour counter reflects the gradient color scale on the Testarossa speedometer. The new Ferrari Limited watches are in solid brushed stainless steel or black ion plated with a custom case back design. The case has a classic barrel-shaped silhouette with fluidly elongated lugs, while its inspired contours are said to be inspired by the iconic 156 F1.

According to Ferrari, everything about these watches resembles its inspirations from vintage racing cars. Its domed mineral crystal is domed like the glass covering the car’s gauges and has been designed to minimize light reflection for better readability of the dial. The design of the buckle itself was inspired by the material found on leather belts used to secure the engine bay of 1960s cars.

Formula Italia dials are available in parchment or black with a contrasting print in black, white or sage green. The padded shoulder straps are made from Italian leather finished in neutral tones of black, sage green and chocolate, distressed to give them a vintage character. Powered by quartz motors, the new heritage-inspired Ferrari watch collection includes three chronographs and two 3-hand models, designed and manufactured in Italy.

Each of these timepieces is issued in a limited edition of 999 pieces and the most expensive model is priced at 432 euros ($ 548) each.
